<itunes:summary>The Denver Diatribe is a weekly podcast about culture, politics and stuff as it pertains to the Mile High City and its environs.

We love and hate on all types of local topics: political dust-ups, medical marijuana, foody wars, the tech industry, police brutality, the art scene, media scandals, bad public policy, good eats, etc. The Denver Diatribe was named the city’s Best Podcast in the 2010 Westword Web Awards. We broadcast live every Friday at 9:00 a.m. on NFNradio.com from the Five Points Media Center. Visit our website, DenverDiatribe.com, for past episodes and additional info. You can also subscribe via iTunes, Google Listen or the podcatcher of your choice. Our rotating cast of co-host are Ron Doyle, Josh Johnson, Jared Jacang Maher, Vanessa Martinez and Joel Warner. We’re always looking for interesting topics, events, guests or good stuff to rant about. Leave a voicemail on our Love & Hate Line at 720-282-YELL (720-282-9355) or drop us a line at info@denverdiatribe.com.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>Joel and Jared have a very illustrious guest this week: State Historian Bill Convery, who's in the studio to talk about the grand opening of the brand new History Colorado Center. In honor of the special occasion, they try to keep things on the up-and-up, but instead devolve into discussions of milking make-believe cows and how, exactly, the post-apocalyptic Boulder in "The Stand" interacts with the post-apocalyptic Denver in "The Hunger Games." Way to be respectful, guys.

The Diatribers also cop to being completely wrong when they predicted the death of Denver's proposed camping ban last week, wonder where aspiring local filmmakers are going to shoot scenes of gritty urban decay now that there's talk of demolishing the I-70 viaduct and have a moment of silence for Falling Bear, gone before his time. Hopefully he's in heaven right now, making sweet, sweet music with Adam Yauch.</itunes:summary>

Joel, Ron, Julian and Josh talk about what happened (or didn't) in Civic Center Park last Friday. Put on our scat hats and dissect blue bear poo. Laugh too hard about a bear falling from a tree in Boulder. Salute Joel's appearance as a scientist on a humor panel with real comedians. And revisit the story of the guy who flipped off a speeding camera.</itunes:summary>

Also, we discuss Gustavo Arellano's claims that the "Mexican hamburger" most typifies the Mexican-American experience and Den-Mex is straight-up bizarre.

Plus, Denver Cruiser Ride announces this year's costume themes. Rainbows, Fairies and Unicorns? Ron is saddling up already.

And, of course, loves and hates.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>We get a bit messy and meta this week when we mash up dining and bracketology, but thankfully we have on hand just the sort of reasonable guy to help us sort it all out: Mark Manger, longtime local photographer and the guy behind Westword's restaurant photography for the past 11 years. For Manger, shooting restaurants, chronicling the delicate dance between the front and back of the house, is akin to capturing street poetry. That's why, as he tells us, he recently started showcasing his best visual versus on a new blog, "Candid Cafe," with a potential book on the horizon.

Seriously, this guy Manger's a pro. For the show he literally filled out an entire 16-team tournament bracket of his favorite local foodie neighborhoods. The rest of us? We just screw around. As usual.</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>This week on the Diatribe, we discuss the fallibility of Colorado's direct file law, the selection of Frontier's new mascot (will it stink?), and Mayor Hancock's "welcome to Denver" messages for the DIA train.

5280 senior editor Natasha Gardner joins Vanessa, Joel, and Jared in the studio (with Julian and Ron both behind the glass) to school us in "direct file," which allows district attorneys to "unilaterally decide when to criminally prosecute kids as adults." In "Direct Fail," Gardner digs deep into the issue, which Joel also tackled for Westword back in 2010. Our verdict? We're with Natasha: Direct file needs a serious fix, which the Colorado legislature just might do this year.

We lighten up in the second part of the show, when Joel adds a new candidate to the current 18 vying to become the next mascot for Frontier Airlines. Finally, we look to Jared, the world's leading expert on DIA conspiracy theories, for his thoughts on the latest "welcome to Denver" audio messages for the airport's train system—which continue to ignore DIA's claims to fame.</itunes:summary>
