On this week’s episode, we talk briefly about NIMBYism good and bad as it relates to the latest Highlands development hullabaloo as well as Christo’s now-greenlit “Over the River” project on the Arkansas.

More importantly, special guest Jake Brodsky of Novo Coffee, the celebrated local roaster, gives us all a lesson in high-end beans. He even offers up some of his favorite Novo coffees for us to slurp on the air. That’s right: This week we have sound effects! Also, Vanessa unabashedly uses the term “mouthfeel.” Good times all around.

This week, Vanessa and Josh talk with award-winning journalist Michael de Yoanna about his latest project, and humor (or the lack of it) in politics on the heels of Stephen Colbert launching his presidential exploratory committee and the convening of the Colorado state legislature (#coleg).

Mike corrects our misinformation about his Denver past before sharing some of his adventures cycling 900-plus miles alongside Iraq and Afghanistan vets recovering from mental and physical injuries. The result of all that pedaling is taking shape in Recovering, the first production from Become Films.

Later, everyone wonders if tweeters @MC_GoldenDome and @YO! JBC Raps will make state politics more interesting, or do they risk turning political media coverage into Sports Center? As Slate’s John Dickerson recently noted, politics (especially on the right side of the aisle) is desperately in need of comedy, which has us looking for funny Republicans to invite on the show.

When Joel and Ron aren’t jealously admiring South Stands’ snazzy business cards, sports apparel line and recent “Best Podcast in Denver” award, the three wax poetic about the burgeoning Denver podcast scene and the good old days when Denver didn’t have any championship teams, but made up for it with rowdy blue-collar hooligans. Incredibly, very little time is spent discussing Tim Tebow.

Local designer Justin Lascelle also calls in with an acceptance speech of sorts for being named “Listener’s Choice Asshole of the Year” in last week’s special episode. True to form, it’s far from charming.

Finally, we give some details about our upcoming live podcast, coming up on Wednesday, Feb. 29 at 7 pm at the Denver Film Center, 2510 E. Colfax Avenue in Denver. It’s gonna be co-hosted by the Onion’s AV Club, so it should be a very good time. Come on out for it, and bring your love and hate.
